Offer In Compromise |
|
|
|
If
you have owed the IRS for very long, they would have already filed
a levy and maybe a lien. In this case, you probably have received
several letters from national "collection representation"
firms who offer to solve your case with pennies on the dollar.
|
|
|
|
Can
they do this? Sure, if circumstances are right. What is their track
record? Some are very good and some are snakes. How do you know
which is which? Ask someone at the IRS in your area. Check with
the BBB. Check with a reputable tax preparer.

TaxMasters
has been handling Offers In Compromise for over 15 years. We have
enough experience to have a pretty good idea which ones will be
successful and which ones will be trouble. A reputable representative
can do that for you.
|
|
|
|
It
is really best to retain the services of an experienced representative
in your area. The cost to you will be much the same regardless of
who you use, so make sure you use someone who knows what they are
doing.

How
Long Does It Take? During good times, an OIC can take 6-9 months
from start to finish. Since the IRS reorganized about 15 months
ago, the time has stretched to 12-15 months. Most offers have to
be submitted to Memphis, Tennessee and are handled fairly impersonally.
The key is completing the paperwork properly, presenting your story
in a way that encourages an agent to favorable consider your case
and attaching the right documentation.
|
|
|
|
Can
you guarantee results? There are ways to determine if you will
get an OIC through with little doubt, and there are ways to know
if it's a waste of time. Most of the time, the facts and circumstances
of your case will be somewhere in the middle. No one can guarantee
that you will get one for sure. No one can speed up the process.
We have had offers declined because the taxpayer, years before,
made a comment to an IRS person that totally prejudiced their case.
We can't possibly know you did that! Therefore, we will not make
any guarantees and, like most representatives, insist on getting
paid before the offer is submitted.

How
do we get started? Give us a call. We'll arrange a meeting and tell
you what we think. There is no charge for the first meeting and
we'll be brutally honest with you as to what we think. We can handle
these by telephone, fax and e-mail also, but don't be surprised
if we refer you to someone closer to home.
